More S2 build questions!
« on: Saturday,August 07, 2021, 08:55:52 AM »
1 - Can anyone tell me, does the S2 fuel tank sit on the floor and if so do people normally sit it on some sort of base (otherwise it looks like it would sit on the captive nuts/screws - not good!) I haven't tried it in position yet as the car needs to be higher but I know the original mounting holes have been glassed over so all I have to go on for location is the filler neck

2 - Do the door window frames get spaced off the door frame aperture slightly to keep them flush, if so is the sealant just round the outer edges of the frame or does the gap need filling?

3 - What is used to 'finish' around the rear window between the carpeted bulkhead and window, the parts book shows some trim - which I don't have.

4 - How is the roof lining finished around the screen edges with a bonded screen?

Thank you all in anticipation - as always!

 Broadside,
 1. my original tank sat directly to floor, however i took my tank out thru the firewall. the floor was patched by a PO.when I put my tank in i used the rubber grommets on the tabs to re-secure with bolts and washers . bolt with steel washer thru fiberglass, rubber washer tank tab , rubber washer ,steel washer, nut.  it was a real PIA.
2.i put a thin bead approx 1/16-1/8'' of the buytl rubber putty. just enough to keep water out stuck to the top inside corner where the trim just touches.
  3. once again PO ,what I removed was a thin piece of something close to cardboard, not plastic , and not leather.

 4. just me , I'm tucking the fabric under the windscreen gasket.

On my fuel tank, 69' S2, it doesn't sit on the floor. Just held on the body with the fasteners. I used socket head bolts with rubber washers and fender washers. It's easier with the hex key verses getting a socket or wrench in there. I used nylocs too.

Thanks both, most helpful.
Dakazman, do you mean you're folding the headlining round onto the screen lip before bonding the screen, or tucking it in after?
I think the thin material used round the rear window is called Millboard, although I think I've seen some done with carpet.

  Hi Broadside,
Sorry for the delay , I was under the weather for a few days.

I checked my windscreen gasket supplied by RD for anS2. It is exactly as I remembered from 30 years ago, my rubber gasket has an interior lip that I’ll tuck the headliner into. I also am going a different route with not applying any glue to the headliner but using piping to thread through the liner material. I just need to crawl into the car but am afraid of falling thru the thin fiberglass flooring.
I may cut some plywood and put on the floor before working further.
