Originally the front luggage area was body colour, I know of a couple of specialists in the UK that started to paint that area black many years ago - one of them was attempting to say that’s how they came from the factory, it was just easier for them not to paint the body colour and get a good finish as they could go back later and paint that area black with textured paint and less prep work required.

I think the black works quite well though tbh, personal preference as with most things.

I thought the front luggage area was body colour but the front area where the rad and spare tire is was black.

That is correct, the luggage area was originally body colour - its this area that I have seen being painted black. The rad/spare wheel area was originally black like you say.

I’m a huge fan of painting utility areas white or light gray. Looks good, easy to clean, and it really brightens up the dark corners, which makes doing any work there so much nicer.
The Twin Cam plays the symphony whilst my right foot conducts the orchestra. At 3800 rpm the Mad Pipe Organ joins in.

Agreed 100%, and 2 ex Lotus paint shop employees at that time would agree with you.

They are still undecided on the black paint on the inside of the doors. Not much of that actually shows as the trim covers the vast majority of it.

Incidentally the chassis number seems to be painted on the inside of the roofs and both doors. Quite how 4445R was written on 4483R, I have no idea, a bit of a mystery that one, must check the doors very soon. .

Mine is L15 to begin with, and the trunk / spare area was black. It needed a refresh  last summer and the refinish was clean and simple. Off to the hardware store to buy a 2 pints of satin black and a couple of brushes. I really got going and redid the entire engine bay, all the inner wheel arches and behind the luggage tray rear bumper area.
Total cost...$20.

Nice, Lou. Does your water temp stay good in the summer with that big hole over your M/C?

No issues, although I have never had her out with the air temps higher than 90+
I also have the fan wired to a remote switch, just in case.

I have a fresh aluminum radiator sitting in the parts bin...it's gonna be the winter project.

I have pop riveted an aluminium plate over a similar hole in 2520R, and painted it to match. Easily removable, but in RHD, the hole is not needed any more.

I replaced my M/C when the slanted reservoir was no longer available (and I didn't know how to take the old reservoir off the M/C without braking it  :( ). It was a pretty easy job to glass a bump over the reservoir using some pieces of fiberglass sheet and then cut a hole to accommodate the rubber cover.
