New import RHD JPS (maybe)
« on: Friday,July 19, 2013, 08:12:27 AM »
I am thinking about importing a 73 (I think) Europa JPS into the USA.  It is currently located in England where it has been garaged and not driven for the last 20+ years.   When I last saw it, it was cosmetically in very good shape not running with possibly frozen calipers.
I am familiar with the import laws so don't expect this to be an issue due to age however I am not sure about parts availability in the USA.  I am wondering if I should get it running in the UK first and then bring it out.
Can anyone shed light on parts availability and cost?

I think it would be easier and more cost-efficient to find a project in the US. Rust is a big problem in the UK, the prices are higher than in the US and shipping involves more cost and a lot more problems. There are a lot of Europa's in the US and they are quite cheap compared to the UK and Europe.

Parts availability is pretty good in the US, RD and Dave Bean are based in the US and Europa Engineering (Richard at Banks service station) ships to the US very quickly.

You'll get a more in-depth answer from the US-residents on here.

Kind regards,

Serge

 :Welcome:

Parts are readily available here in the states. The only hassle you might have is those parts specific to RHD but, Banks Europa in the UK would have those odd parts. I tend to agree with the previous post, the cars are available here at a much lower cost.

Thanks for the replies.  The car was my uncles who recently passed away he loved the marque so the sentimental value is significant.  Rust I hope has been minimized by being garaged for 20 years, but I will check it out.
I have recently shipped an MGB from Australia so am familiar with the process, which is pretty easy if the car is older than 25years.
Thanks again.  I will post some pictures if I end up bringing it over.

If you need a quote on shipping PM me. My girl friend works for a shipping company that does a lot of ocean freight from the UK, Australia, New Zealand to the States and vice-versa. They can offer door to door service. It is an Australian / US based company here in Southern California.

Keep in mind that right hand drive cars are extremely difficult to sell in the States, when you get to that stage in life........and you will.

Just wondering about the possibility of shipping a TCS frame back with the car sharing the same shipping container.
If you decide to go that route, let this group know. Willing to help with the cost of shipping. I'm also located in So Cal.
I'm assuming that cars are transported in containers and not in the open.

Grumblbuns,  I am pretty sure I am going to bring it back, but not sure when at this stage. I am thinking about having it checked over by a lotus specialist over there to give an idea of what I'm in for.  I will post again if it works out but I would expect in the next 6 months I will put it on a boat. (They are containered).
