More chassis help
« on: Monday,October 14, 2019, 05:18:12 AM »
I am getting near to completing the chassis assembly of my 73 Twin Cam Special.  The engine & trans are out but I have the rear of the chassis on casters so I can roll the car.  The front end is now on its wheels.

Since I didn't disassemble and the car and the workshop & parts manual only show so much, I have more questions.

1).  What cables need to installed before the body goes back on?  2).  I have the water transfer tubes in place with new grommets, and the parking brake cable.  Where does the parking cable exit the chassis in front?  Does it need to be in now?  3).  Does The speedo cable need to be installed and where does it exit front and rear?  4).  Does the oil pressure line need to be installed and where does it exit the chassis front and rear?  5). I have seen posts telling where the heater and choke cables exit in the rear but I don't have much to go on as to what holds them in place in the center console.  Do they need to be installed now or can they be done with the body on?
6).  I think lastly, how the heck do you connect the sway bar?  I have it connected at the upper control arm, but that's all I can manage.

I plan to rest the body back on the chassis for the winter and lift if off again when the engine and trans are to be installed next spring.  I also plan to swap the fuel tanks for another set I had cleaned and lined next spring.

Thank you for whatever description and photos you can provide.

Q Where does the parking cable exit the chassis in front?

A There is a slot in the chassis very close to the reaction level pivot mounting where the cable coes out of the chassis to attach to the reaction lever. You can put a wire down the chassis to collect it at any time.

Getting the hand brake cable with horseshoe the right way up, is much easier before the body is attached.

Q 3).  Does The speedo cable need to be installed and where does it exit front and rear?

A Hole in the Y just above the hand brake cable.  You can thread a wire down the chassis box at any time to pull it through, but this is much easier before the heater matrix is put in, so thread it through early in the cabin rebuild.

Q 4).  Does the oil pressure line need to be installed and where does it exit the chassis front and rear?

A Same as the speedo cable.

Q  5). I have seen posts telling where the heater and choke cables exit in the rear but I don't have much to go on as to what holds them in place in the center console.  Do they need to be installed now or can they be done with the body on?

A There is an upside down bracket that holds the cables and the centre console in place with appropriate spacers. Long 1/4" UNF bolts hold it in place.

Q 6).  I think lastly, how the heck do you connect the sway bar?  I have it connected at the upper control arm, but that's all I can manage.

A Use a ratchet strap wound around the ends to tighten the ends to attach to the bottom of the front shox.
