horn location
« on: Tuesday,June 04, 2019, 07:53:41 AM »
I don't have a horn in my twin cam.  Where is it properly located?  I see it in the parts list, but not on a diagram.  And should there be two, a high note and a lower frequency horn?  Seems so from the parts list.

Thanks!
Vince

I don't remember where the horn was mounted originally. I would guess it would have been on the floor in front of front trunk somewhere. I would not try to be original in that regard. My memory of the original horn was that it was very weak - not as loud as my old VW Beetle horn. Air horns are common on many Europas and r.d. sells a nice compact horn.

With the size of a Europa, it's not always easy to be seen. If you can't be seen, you must be heard!

Next to the spare wheel on the inside of the left front wheel arch.

I replaced my wimpy S2 horn with a small air horn. It's still wimpy by air horn standards but is definitely quite a bit louder than the original.

Horns are located in the left front upper fender arch...

For safety reasons , I would recommend a system louder than the stock version. I also run the exhaust w/ no muffler...just a header and resonator. Better to be heard, if not seen.

Location, location, location.  You do not want to be be beside or slight behind an adjacent vehicle.  In front or behind.  If I'm beside, I have one hand on the horn.  I use very loud air horns: just twin trumpet Fiamms driven by a compressor off a 70's Citroen.  The compressor is huge.  I have my horns mount off a front bumper bolt so there are closer to the grill.

I also ride motorcycles and scooters.  One friend wears the most outrageous set of bright plaid pants and has a sticker on his scoot saying "Loud Pants Save Lives".

Thanks for the input.  I ordered a pair of air horns and I'll figure out somewhere good to mount them in the front of the car.
