Just griping...
« on: Thursday,April 04, 2019, 07:05:54 AM »
The cars are driving me nuts.
My Europa has a Megasquirt on it and I screwed up last year updating the firmware and then finding out that the tune was living on a computer that had a dead hard drive, so need to retune. I dont care what anyone says...its not trivial.
Got it idling, went to put it outside and %#$%@!@#. The darn clutch is stuck again. It seems like every time I let this thing sit for a couple of months in winter, the clutch plate glues itself to the flywheel. Its pretty easy to deal with on a running car, less so if all the car can do is idle. So I let it warm all the way up at idle, the fan comes on. More ^#$&@#%@!!!!. The fan is making a racket. Still need to source a new fan motor.

NSX. Changed the timing belt. Takes me like 20 hours. Could be worse, but that job requires so much disassembly in a small space it would almost be easier to pull the motor. Some people do. OK, all that is left on that car is to really give it a good cleaning/detailing. I am so tight on time this year.

The Locost Seven. The oil pan started to leak at one of my welds where I put on a bash plate....sigh. And then I spot one of the Wilwood master brake cylinders leaking...and dissolving paint!!
First time I will try to get this thing inspected in MA (it has been titled in NH up till recently. at least getting the title transferred to MA was not a major hassle). I am not expecting it to be a slam dunk.

Don't get me started on prepping the boat for the season.

And then there is work... I need a clone. I have become a slave to the toys! Oh yeah, forgot about the motorcycle...

I’ve never personally had the problem with a clutch sticking, but a buddy of mine has a dual disc clutch that loves to stick! He uses a stick to hold down the clutch pedal if he knows that the car is going to sit for a while.

you know what they say about those who have the most toys....    they die keeping them all up and running!

I think we do more disservice to our toys when we have too many of them.   too much maintenance to keep track of, to little attention spread over a wide array of toys, leads to frustration when this stuff happens.    Thus the idea of keeping 1 or possibly 2 at most, cars to keep/play/enjoy with.   you can only drive one at a time.     Pick one (or 2) and sell the rest...

Exactly my thought. As much as I would like to buy a few more sports cars I could never possibly maintain them properly. Too many toys already with 2 sports cars, a Subaru, Ford F150, 60 year old wooden boat, 5th wheel and an old house. How did I ever have time to work?

Some days I think about thinning the herd...I just would not know what to sell.
The NSX is the perfect combination of easy and rewarding to drive, reliable, fast enough. Handling is sweet. Its comfortable. It doesnt look all that dated. It has everything I want in a sports car. The downside is that the value of it has gotten pretty high and I find myself reluctant to just pour on the miles unless they are going to be the really fun kind of miles.
The Europa...its part of the family. I have had it since it was new. I talked about selling it a few years back and the kids all went crazy. Of course the conversation ended up with "We want it when you are gone!" I tell myself that is because they want to remember me...I hope thats true. I also love the feel of the steering. Nothing feels this good...not even the NSX.
The Locost Seven. I love it because I can drive it like I stole it. Its a crazy bit of kit including the scary kind of crazy.  If you think you feel exposed in the Europa on the highway, go try a Seven.
So if I had to get rid of one, it would probably be the Europa. Would I still be allowed here? Anyone want a very nice 74 Special (I promise I will unstick the clutch and fix the tune first...heck, I will even put stupid carbs back on it if that makes the sale. Just kidding...not for sale (at least not today)

Don't you also have a sports racer on the go?  I vaguely recall something along the lines of a DSR.

Yeah, its a basement dweller in many pieces at the moment. I would sell that if I could get close to what I have in parts for it. It was going to be a track day car to share with my oldest son (the one we lost), so it has been pretty much collecting dust for the last couple of years. Other than some of the bodywork being in the way now and then, its not giving me any issues.
More griping...wife just pulled in with the Volvo and told me that it has a headlight out.

I'm glad you live a long ways from me... otherwise I would be asking questions about the sports racer and I don't need another project.

Seems there are a lot of us with many projects on the go.  But that's what makes life fun!  We all work hard and need some form of escape, even if it is more work.  I too have too many projects.  My goal is to reduce the effort required for my daily drivers so I can focus on the fun cars.  Seems I made choices in the past and then often lead to expensive maintenance on daily drivers, dipping into my time and money I can use on the cool old cars...  It is just too hard to make the decision on which special car you want to sell, I figure I better make the daily driver boring so I want to fix and use the other cars even more.

Got the clutch unstuck. Fan is quiet now (kinetic adjustment, somehow, the blades started contacting the housing. Nothing loose or wobbly. Who knows.). Just need to fix the tune on the Megasquirt and then off to inspection...that is, if the rain ever stops.
Other cars, NSX needs a coolant change but is good to go.
Seven, dropped the oil pan to fix the leak. Hopefully fixed. Have to reassemble, insure, get inspected, enjoy.
Not even mentioning the daily drivers.
