S2 Finishing headliner above window?
« on: Saturday,November 24, 2018, 05:03:20 PM »
I've seen pics of a small panel the finishes off the headliner. Does anyone know what it is made of and how it attaches? What have other used? I was thinking some 1/16" or 1/8" ABS sheet and wrapping.

Are you talking about the little panels above the doors? They are made of aluminum sheet covered with padded vinyl (naugahyde). They are attached with sheet steel angles that are attached to the car using sheet metal screws. The sheet metal angles were glued onto the aluminum but double stick badge tape works well. The pannels are roughly bullet shaped. There are four holes above the door. Two of them are for mounting the aforementioned panels and two are for mounting the rod that holds the visor on that side.

Since the underlying panels don't show, you can make them out of whatever you like.

All those panels I have taken off have been covered with black vinyl.

Likewise all the headlinings have been white.

I tried to do a one piece head liner before I realized there were trim pieces above the window. It didn't turn out too good.  From Bank's site, it looks like there is a trim above the rear glass too. Is that vinyl covered aluminum too?

Hi Clifton,
The first pic is of the 'cantrail' that fits over the top of the door and is secured by two screws through the doorframe just above the sealing strip.
I did not re-install them and just brought the headlining down to the doorseal and tucked it behind. see pic 2.
The third picture is the upper surround for the rear window. It is made of thick card (not covered in leather cloth) the type used for old door cards. I have not replaced this yet as I do not know what material best to use. Richard at Banks suggested folding leather cloth and glue it in place.
Hope this helps.

For those of you who might own S1s (and early S2s?), the finishing panels above the doors are held in place by the vinyl that you glue to upper door aperture and then cover with the door seal.

John,
Do you have a pic of the upper door aperture?  My early S2 came with one of the finishers but it wasn't in it original location (was residing in the footwell with other bits and pieces) so I haven no idea if it would match the 46 or the later S2 (there are no angle brackets on it as per the photo that Stulesie posted).

I spent months trying to find some trim or edging that I could use on mine. Gave up in the end and asked my local autotrimmer to make something.  Very happy with the final result.  I didn’t fit trim to the rear.

Trim above the door on an S1 (early S2?):

Rear

Front (covers sun visor mounting)

Middle

Door seal peeled back

The cover on the trim plate is long enough to wrap around the door opening, is glued in place and covered by the door seal.  Nothing else holds it in place on an S1.
