NG3 Differential Ring Nut Wrench
« on: Sunday,September 30, 2018, 06:18:21 PM »
What are you guys using for a differential ring nut wrench for an NG3? I have used a motorcycle clutch tool as Joji suggested elsewhere on this board and it worked alright but I'm preparing for an eventual gearbox rebuild and I want something that works even better. I just bought one of r.d. enterprises wrench. It's a nice tool but it doesn't engage with the teeth on my NG3 ring nuts - the teeth don't match up with the slots in the wrench.

So does anyone have any suggestions?

Are the nuts the same on the NG3 & 365 transaxles? I bought a KD 2770 spindle nut socket. Flea market find, gave $2 or 3 for it. Seems I remember checking to see if it fit the 365 finned nuts, I'll check later today, the 365 is not easily accessible at present.  My NG3 has the CVJ flange installed, so cannot check. If it works, you're welcome to borrow it -  it's not something I use everyday, lol.

The nuts are different between the NG3 and 365. The 365 is a flat nut with prominent fins where the NG3 nut is "dished" with less prominent fins. The NG3 nut is a stronger design but unfortunately, it isn't compatible in this regard which is a little odd since it doesn't seem like it would be difficult to have the stronger design and keep it like the previous design enough to use the wrenches used on the older nuts.

I appreciate the offer, Andy. I'm in no hurry. I'm just collecting stuff I'll need when I try a rebuild later - probably a couple of years from now. I have heard of people using the KD spindle nut socket for a ring nut wrench but I don't remember if it was used on the NG3. They're pretty cheap on ebay so I might get one just to see.

BDA, I just took a close look at the NG3 diff nut and I agree with you that the fins are smaller and more fragile than the 365/336 trannies. Since you've already disassembled your NG3 several times, you know that the nuts are not seized and break if you try to loosen the nut, so use my suggested tool to remove the nut and have a local fabricator re-create the Renault NG3 tool, B.Vi.807.01 with the nut in hand. Get an estimate and I'll split the cost with you for two examples.

Thanks, Joji. That's a nice offer. If I were rebuilding my tranny now, I'd have a nut to use to get a tool made, but my plans are further out in the future.  I'll be sending the one I got from r.d. back and I'll see if they're interested in selling a wrench for the NG3. That should be even cheaper. I'll probably also ask Michel at Apine-America if they sell an NG3 tool and what it costs.

If anybody has an NG3 differential nut that can be used to fabricate a wrench and is willing to use it as a pattern to fabricate a tool, please post. I know there is more than just me and Joji who would like one.

In the meantime, I'll post what I find out.

Amazing! That may be the correct tool but it doesn't look quite like what the manual shows but the the part number is very close. The manual part number is B. Vi. 807-1. At $75, I don't think I'll buy it in case it works.
