The seductive trap of the Lotus Europa
« on: Thursday,November 09, 2017, 01:08:11 PM »
This is an interesting series by a published car geek's experiences with his Europa TC project. I hope he finishes it so he can see what he's missed out on while he was building it!

To make a Europa without a gearbox into a roller:-

Get a wooden pallet.

Screw 2 x 4 ft long 4 x 2s to the long edges.

Screw 6" castor wheels to the end of each 4 x 2.

Jack the back up, and put on 2 axle stands.

Jack the front up under the centre of the chassis crossmember (where the closing plate is bolted to the chassis).

Push the pallet on wheels under the car.

Remove jack and axle stands, and the car can be pushed most places.

(I copied F1 pit crews pushing their cars into the pits).

Make sure the pallet is forward of the petrol tanks if you are taking them out.

I’m smiling at the story. I’m only a year into my rebuild and I’m excited about the thought of having it done by summer of 2018. Hopefully. Maybe. Did i say I’m excited?

Mine has a twin link kit so I just fabricated an adapter to locate the lower links:

Really clean and simple look but I know it takes a lot of time to accomplish.
Are you going to weld it in?

The lower links are now located by the bracket attached to the transaxle as per original.  The bracket was just so the car could be rolled around at the paint shop.

I emailed the author offering support and motivation to complete his Europa. He replied and it looks like there won't be any more installments as he said he "finished the series." With regards to his Europa project, he is apparently having trouble getting his machine shop to move on his engine. He hasn't given up on his project so hopefully he'll write another article on the final results.

I thought about suggesting he take his motor to Quicksilver but figured he probably knew about them already. Hopefully he gets he gets his machine shop to finish his motor for him.
