5 speed Gearbox Parts
« on: Thursday,June 15, 2017, 10:22:58 AM »
I will shortly be refitting 2 x 5 speed gearboxes in 1974 cars, and those gearboxes have been standing for probably 30+ years.

I will change the oil, but the castleated rings which go around the outlet shaft bearings were all loose, as if the PO was going to change the oil seals.

Q1. Where can I get the oil seals?

Q2. Where can I get the shims so the roll pins fit correctly?

Anyone any ideas please?

You will have to remove the bell housing and tighten the "castleated rings" as per the manual to set up the diff's ring gear backlash and bearing pre-load.  You are in the UK so Banks would have the seals and gaskets.

Yes banks for the seals and roll pins. I think he has shims. I don't think the 'O' seals are available. Which should also be replaced. In talking to Richard at banks he said re use the old seals with some silicone sealant.
Don't forget the seal the threads with non setting sealant.
There are 3 places where oil can leak out.
The thread of the ring. So sealant needs to be used
The shaft. So the oil seal sorts this
The splines. The 'O' seals sort this.
Not the best arrangement!

HI Alex,

I would try a bearing supplier if you have a seal out and can measure it. I found replacements for my 352 box quite easily (simplybearings ? I can't remember for sure). It wasn't an exact match, I think the Renault on was 11mm wide and the replacement 10mm, but the inner & outer diameters were spot on and after all, that's what's doing the sealing.  It was cheap, IIRC £5-6 each. I did fit them with sealant though, just in case....
