rear shock washers

I'm just replacing my beaten to death original shocks for adjustables and find that the jaws of the rear support rail are too narrow and need opening out to accept the new ones. Do I need to widen them enough for washers between the jaws and the new top bushes or just enough to clamp the supports onto the replacements without using washers between the faces? Can I also add that the Knowledgebase is the best thing since sliced bread..    Chris

I posted a shot of mine for Rascott on this thread  http://www.lotuseuropa.org/LotusForum/index.php?topic=917.315  so you can see how I've got mine.

I don't recall fitting washers at the top, there's no rotational movement there as the damper is fixed almost vertical and it's steel on steel. I did a quick check and there's nothing in the parts list either for that end, just one under the nut.   There are washers at the bottom to protect the aluminium carrier and I can see how it's technically better to do so at the top but I'm not convinced it's needed.

I don't have top mount washers on any of my Europas. What rear shocks are you using?
