John, that is fabulous!! That's got to be about the nicest S1 I've ever seen! Very clever and useful mods that are artfully executed!

How does the A/C work? How does she run?

It has run but it is not yet running.  I have started it and warmed it up for its first head retorque but that's about it.  I don't want petrol in the tanks until it's close to being on the road what with fuel being what it is these days.  AC is not hooked up yet.  Wiring the evaporator in is next, then finish up the dash, hook up the shift cables and then sort the running.

I think it is nice as well, or it will be someday at least, but it is not original.  Every so often I wake up in a cold sweat wondering if I have committed a heinous crime or not.

There are a lot of things more deserving of waking up in a cold sweat than that!

Here's what I learned about modified/original Europas:

My car is nice. It's not the nicest I've heard of - or seen pictures of (I'd say from what I've seen of yours, it's much nicer than mine) - but it has what I consider nice touches (BDA engine with dry sump, stainless steel headers, Richard's twin link rear suspension, rear discs, front vented discs, cloth interior, burl wood dash, 3-piece modular wheels, etc.). In two LOGs over on this side of the pond, I participated in the people's choice competition where attendees vote on their favorite car in different categories. It's not a concours. The first time, I got a 3rd place out of probably between 6 and 10 TCs. The next time I made an effort to spruce it up - I polished all the aluminum and stainless steel, etc. - hoping to get a better result. In spite of the fact that it got a lot of attention (and even a mention in the club magazine) I got another third! I was disappointed and frustrated and I thought, "What do they want?" The other TCs were very nice examples that were basically stock - especially compared to mine - but I didn't think any of them were nicer than mine. The answer came to me, "I don't know but whatever it is but I don't have it and since I built my car for me. Except for the mistakes I made so it's just what I want." I now have no problem with whatever I get in any people's choice contest I might enter in the future.

Sorry for the long story. The short reply is make it for you. Not for someone else. If they don't like it or think you've ruined a perfectly good S1, that's their opinion. Personally, I like Lotuses, but I don't think they are so special and significant that they couldn't/shouldn't be improved upon. But that's me and apparently you, too.

Enjoy working on your car and driving it when it's "done" and sleep well! She really is a beauty. So far you've done a fantastic job and I expect you'll maintain the level of craftsmanship through to the end.

Swift no more:

I didn't want to tackle the body work myself so I paid a shop a bloomin' fortune to do the work.  Oh my lord, it was absolutely stunning when I got it back: beautiful, deep, rich paint with a mirror finish.  I work on it outside and push it back in at night so it gets heated in the sun and then cooled every day.  It took about two weeks before the stress cracks started reappearing.

Such is life.  The chap has agreed to do it again but I have, somewhat explicably, lost confidence in their work.  Negotiations continue...

If it's any consolation, it looks pretty stunning in those photographs. I thought the depth of paintwork very impressive and a great colour for the car.

 :coolpic: It may not be stock but your mods are well thought out and well executed! Your car is looking GREAT! I wish it were easier to see yours and others up close. I've only every seen one other Europa, at least that I can clearly remember.

...and this is hands down the coolest vintage Europa photo I've seen!!!

What are the cutting tools to use to remove the S1 body from the frame? Do you need to wear suite and mask when you doing it?  I am about ready to cut the body and remove the frame from under?  Any suggestions you have on this task are greatly appreciated.

If you can, do it outside as there will be a lot of dust.  I wore disposable coveralls and dust masks from the painting section in the local hardware store.

You will have to drill out all the rivets holding the chassis to the body: front luggage compartment, three each side in the seat area but you can leave the ones on the bottom of the frame for after you have it out (if you're still removing it out the bottom).

I used an electric cut off saw (dremel is too small):

BE CAREFUL, these things will cut through anything: you, your sister, etc.  Make sure it is turned off and not rotating before setting it down.

Plan your cuts carefully.  Five minutes of thinking may save you hours of fibreglassing.  Save the pieces you cut off!

I took mine out the back so I can't help you with where to cut.
