Using a performance header on a cross-flow Renault results in the end of the header being awfully close to the rear of the car. In order to get a wee bit more secondary pipe length, I ran the pipe sideways over the transmission, back through a large, fairly-open muffler and a sharp turn to an adjustable rear “muffler” out the usual place.

And the Supertrapp:

I used an appropriately set up MIG welder and the ugly welds are strictly due to my distinct lack of talent. I’ll be putting a substantial bracket between the pipe and the lefthand side of the muffler to make the structure rigid. I’ll then have two brackets connecting it to the tranny for support.

I don't know John, I don't think your welds look too bad! In fact, the whole thing looks pretty good! I hadn't thought of using Supertrapp muffler but it is probably just what I need since my car is pretty loud. It may make a radio useful! Thanks for the idea!
It looks like you're getting pretty close to being "done". Keep up the good work! I'd love to see more pictures of your car!

Looks like a nice setup! I have read in the past that the supertrapp exhausts comes with a substantial power loss. They were being used on some race cars to make their cars comply to the noise regulations on racetracks and they found they were a lot slower with that exhaust than without.

I think you're right Serge but I'm pretty sure that it will be far too noisy without it. The nice thing is that you can "tune" it by adding or removing plates. My cam is a "fat street" cam and less effected by flow restrictions in the top end than a "full race" cam.

Have you ran your new exhaust yet?
A friend of mine put Supertrapps on his Mustang & didn't like them,
said it sounded like a dune buggy...
They were straight pipes though (no mufflers) with just the Supertrapps.

Not yet. First start should be within a month or so.

Final welds done, braced, supported and wrapped:

More pretty work from you, John!
