Title: A very accurate review on the Europa
Post by: Grumblebuns on Tuesday,February 11, 2025, 06:35:06 PM
Came across this video review on the Europa from a non Europa driver. He's pretty accurate in his assessment of the Europa and its strengths and weaknesses.

That is a good video. I have a few minor nits to pick like his saying the rear suspension has "chapman struts." As I remember, there were a few even more minor things I didn't like but I agree that it is a accurate video by somebody who understands the car pretty well. People who don't understand Europas make terrible videos about them.

I have to say that this video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PMBerb7l3pM&t=262s) is my all time favorite Europa video. Jayemm (Jay M.?) understands what Europas are all about and I love his enthusiasm - which I think is warranted, but then I would.

Great video. I agree it is about the best description of the Europa experience, especially from a non-owner. His growing enthusiasm for the car is evident as he is seduced by its charms.

Thanks for posting.

Well I give up. I've tried over a dozen times and I cannot get this video to load. That MSN page is trying to load dozens of videos and ads and I don't know what all else all at once. So all I see are spinning circles around all the arrows over each video. Is there some other place that this video can be viewed on like YouTube?

It's the "Number 27" channel on youtube.

Both videos are great and caused me to take the Europa out through the local twisty roads!!

Ta ever so much. I liked this video better, (more info and to the point) than the one BDR posted. In the 2nd video the guy is very much in love with the car. However, recognising that he’s overlooked the Europa all these years and is now giddy with its handling doesn’t really justify his making an overly long video. What was it 11 minutes of him gushing over the car but not really saying much? I knew the Europa was a fun car when it was first introduced just looking at it. The Twin Cam versions were even better than the Renaults. And it’s been almost forty years since I last drove one.

Grr, they didn't flip the ring gear to the other side.  It is a hypoid diff, albeit only by a wee bit.  Yes, you can flip a VW ring gear from side to side but not a Renault one.

John, so did Renault manufacture a new crown and pinion specifically for the Lotus Europa in the 336s?

It wasn't a case of Lotus buying Renault engines and transmissions and modifying them. Renault manufactured and supplied the whole kit, adapted for Lotus and ready to install.  That was the deal.

Yup, Renault manufactured a new gearset, and in a different ratio to what they had on the shelf.  Don't believe me though.  Read it in their own in-house magazine:
