Title: Restored 1970 Europa w/Dry Sump Race Engine on eBay $20K BIN
Post by: Vegantune on Saturday,December 21, 2024, 10:44:55 AM
Worth a look. Whole lotta of mods. Might not be everyone's cuppa. But also lots of wow factor here. Restoration, upgrades, pics, driving videos, and description pretty impressive, but are they honest? Ford engine and VW transmission. Not an auction. $20K BIN located in Simi Valley, CA. Says it's for street. Not sure where to put rear license plate. But if it comes close to living up to what they show and say, seems very underpriced. Just not sure it is what they show and claim.

I feel he is less than honest and the modes are do not add performance. It looks racey but it has all season tires. Cast iron block and head engine is no way weighing what is claimed in a Europa. He used a FF header that doesn't fit in the car. Seats have zero lateral support.   I guess it would be a good car to tell stories at car shows.

Those seat backs are pretty low. Isn’t there a reason shoulder belts should attach to the car above the shoulder? Solid shifter gate, though.

I'm not buying that displayed curb weight. That Pinto motor probably weighs at least 100+ lbs over the Renault motor. Where is the other weight savings? This guy has been trying to sell stuff like this for years.

Caveat Emptor.

Ditto on the weight claim. Also 200hp 2L Pinto not believable. Formula Continental spec he mentions is 140 hp. Throw in 45 DCOE's, more cam, etc. you're maybe at 170 tops.
Even 200hp 16 valve Zetec is marginally streetable.

I have Vizard’s book on 2.0 Fords …. No way it is making 200 hp

I quite like modified Europas, but there is much about this one that is off-putting. Some of the mods seem poorly thought out and exhibit untidy workmanship. The interior, especially the dash is ghastly, and what's going on with the seats & belts. I am not a fan of most people's interpretation of Gold Leaf livery as applied to a Europa, and that includes this one. I have long thought a 2.0 Pinto would make a great Europa engine but for its weight, which as mentioned, is inconsistent with the car weight claimed in this ad. In addition to inconsistencies with the ad, it is written in the manner of a snake oil ad. Red flags.

The description says:

FORD 2.0 L  ( F.C. S2000 RACE SPEC ENGINE WITH LONG RODS )

That may mean it has a larger capacity via boring and/or stroking?
The driving videos are from two years ago and show a stock bonnet and engine cover fully painted red.

I think that is just to give it a better rod length to stroke ratio.

I wrote that guy off the first time I read one of his listings and he verbally shat on the Renault engines.
As I recall the car in the ad was motorcycle engine powered.
Impressive RPM and NO torque.
