Title: Lower dash trim question
Post by: TurboFource on Sunday,November 10, 2024, 06:22:14 AM
The black goo (what is it?) inside my lower dash trim is distorted and of course the vinyl is too, what have people used as a replacement for the lower trim?

I used foam rubber from window draught excluder, and just black vinyl leathercloth trim.

I think I'm describing what 4129R said but I was unfamiliar with his terminology. I think it's just a strip of about 3/4" square foam (or whatever the width of the aluminum strip is) covered in vinyl.

You can actually buy foam-backed vinyl right off the shelf, it gets used for padded dashboards and other random stuff all the time still. I have a few rolls floating around, which happen to be made for marine applications.

That's all it is.  Relatively dense foam with a vinyl covering.  I just recovered a spare set last winter for the new dashboard for 3291R.  Only difference is that I used some scrap Connolly leather I had left over (and is still flexible and has some scent left!) from when I redid my turboesprit interior.  One of these days, I'll get around to pulling the windshield and replacing the dash and crashpad (also newly upholstered).

I used 1/2 pipe foam insulation covered with vinyl , on a length of alloy angle, worked fine.
