Title: 336 oil leak
Post by: dakazman on Sunday,November 05, 2023, 11:54:04 AM
It all started with a oil leak after I did the clutch so in my spare time read the manual and said to myself , Why not.
so today i pulled the rear housing off and found that it only had a light film of silicone. Okay I had that figured out with some new gasket material .
What I didn't forsee is that the shift lever cross shaft was coated/ packed with brown grease and was mixed with sand grit all around the spring. I cleaned off everything and read the manual again about refitting. NO GREASE MENTIONED.
Does the shaft get lubed before refitting?
It now works much better and easily finds center because the spring around the cross shaft is free.

I checked all the service bulletins only grease on one type gearbox on the ball in that area on another type gearbox.
So I decided to pack a small amount of grease on both end of the shaft where it exits to the rubber boots. maybe it will keep a little moisture out and lube the bushing.
All back together. With new gasket.
  Fingers crossed no oil tomorrow.

I imagine your PO greased it trying to keep dirt out as they couldn't find the right boots for the cross shaft.  I would fit the right boots.

I found a supplier for those, but still haven’t gotten to the measurements they want . As for the leak now, I can live with this after a day and a half.

Cannot one fit seals on the ends of the shaft?

Kram, that would be a possibility but a $1.00 rubber boot will do just fine.

BJThomp, yes I did see that but without going back to the site , I vaguely recall the price is at $13. Each plus shipping.

Rubber bellows cost 1-3$ here , and at other sites. See examples. I didn’t have originals so I don’t know the shaft diameter, length and the OD. I’ll find them soon at a better price point.
