My cable works but rattles a bit. Can I simply withdraw it from the gearbox end, clean it and lightly oil it then push it all the way back in.

Usually they come out from the speedometer end. Other than that, yes, you can. Use a light-weight grease.

I've had good luck with this stuff, on everything from motorcycle controls, aircraft cables (not the cables themselves, but the pulleys and throttle/mixture/carb heat/cabin heat/fresh air controls), and did my throttle, choke, and clutch in 3291R when I renewed them. No doubt it would work well for the speedo cable.

Thanks guys.Ive had a quick look behind the Speedo guage and it's quite a tight fit to get my hand up there, let alone pull out the cable.

You can do it, Sparkrite!
Mine broke and I installed a new one. It has a nylon (or some-such) bush on one end that is a tight interference fit (so it isn't intended to be removed to facilitate installation). So I had no choice but to put it in from the speedo end. There are more difficult things to access in a Europa, I'm sure.
