Title: Fidanza Aluminum Flywheel 122661
Post by: exarkun1178 on Sunday,January 12, 2014, 01:45:55 PM
Does anyone have experience with- 122661: Fidanza Aluminum Flywheel?

Ebay and other retailers have them for 350$

I figure as long as the engine is out and split from the trans, might make the ideal time to shed some weight from the car.  9lbs is 9lbs right?

Hopefully Steve Veris will chime in.  If not then go to Yahoo Groups.  I know he trolls over there.
Yep, regular flywheels are like boat anchors.

Is it easier to glaze or burn an aluminum flywheel over steel?

Be careful,

the Fidanza flywheels on Ebay are for the Twin Cam engine! The one that's for sale on the Yahoo group is one that was custom made in a group buy a couple of years ago. There are some reviews in the KB but the consensus is that it's a really nice upgrade without losing any tractability in our light cars.

The Aluminium flywheels have a steel section for the clutch plate to grab on to if I'm not mistaken, so it wouldn't make a difference.

I'll be going with a custom steel one, maybe a little bit more expensive, but you can get them in singles in stead of having to wait for a group buy. Weight should be around 3kg.

Kind regards,

Serge

 9lbs is 9lbs right?
Actually, not right. Cutting 9 lbs from an accelerating spinning flywheel should equal at least 200 lbs. With 9 lbs removed from the flywheel (especially if that weight is removed from the outer portion of the flywheel), the car should show an improvement in acceleration consistent with removing at least 200 lbs static weight from the car. On a sub 1600 lb car, this would be very significant.

Quicker acceleration, crisper throttle response and improved fuel economy should all be products of a lighter flywheel. I've been very interested in doing an aluminum flywheel swap myself. If you do this mod, please post your results. I'm particularly interested to how idle, low speed drivability and acceleration from a low engine speed is effected. These elements can be negatively affected with a switch to a light weight flywheel, though with our lightweight cars I believe they would be easily overcome.

Keep us posted. Cheers

Apparently my first reply got lost, try again. There is a thread on the Yahoo mail list concerning the 200mm vs 215mm Fidanza flywheel. I just measured mine and if I'm measuring the correct area, mine measures 205mm. Am I measuring the flywheel correctly, see photo.

Thanks for the images!

I hope this works out, to me this is the right kind of added lightness.

To confirm, this fits the s2 stock Renault wedge head engine?

I have not actually fitted the flywheel to my wedgehead S2. This flywheel was part of the group buy coordinated by Tom Patten a couple of years ago. Post the question to Tom on the Europa mail list.

I have had a quote from TTV racing for a flywheel that will fit the Renault engines (697, 821 and crossflow) for the original 200mm clutch after I have sent them my original flywheel and clutch.

Each flywheel will cost 356.25 euro + VAT + carriage

They say that my goal weight of 3 kg will not be a problem to achieve.

If we order 3 or more flywheels there will be a discount. There is no minimum order quantity!

I will definitely be ordering one, if you want one as well please get in touch with me so I can arrange a discount.

You can see some examples of their products on http://www.ttvracing.com (http://www.ttvracing.com)

Kind regards,

Serge
