Either this was never used or I totally lost track of this wire. I cannot remember nor figure out what this is supposed to be connected to.
-
Backup light?
Neutral indicator?
Not a lot of possibilities.
-
I don’t remember ever seeing anything like that before. The only electric connections on a tranny is the switch for the backup lights and that’s on the side.
-
Test light and row through the gears.
-
Additional earth tab?
If you have a multimeter you could 'beep’ it out
……rather strange

X2 on the earth but a lot of trouble to go through.

Strange. I figured it was stock.

Even after enlarging the image I am unsure.
Is that threaded into a bung?
Looks like a bung was welded into the case and the tab is attached to a hex nut so is removable.
I wonder if it might be a temperature sender?
I think your best bet for identification is to remove it and identify what sort of switch it is.

Definitely not stock. I just compared the picture to my ‘73TCS 365 transaxle. All the other casting features look like mine, except that fitting.

My 395 has that fitting. I pulled the switch and fit a plug instead. I use it to add oil.
