Title: Rod bolt torque .... Lotus or ARP?
Post by: TurboFource on Tuesday,May 17, 2022, 02:15:33 PM
When I installed my ARP rod bolts yesterday I saw on the lubricant pack to follow recommendations...
so I followed the 45 ft lbs  in the Wilkins book...then this morning I saw a little folded up piece of paper
in the ARP packaging that recommended 55 ft lbs ... since the lubricated torque is already more than
in the Wilkins book do I follow the ARP number?

I would go with ARP’s recommendation. Torque specs are for setting the amount the bolt is stretched. I think ARP knows how much to stretch their bolts.

Yup, go with the ARP info, for sure.

I used ARP bolts on the head, rod bolts and flywheel.  I used their grease and torque recommendation.  Nothing has come apart, and I drive fairly aggressively and shift at the redline often.

Will do, thanks! I am using their flywheel bolts too.

One thing on the flywheel.  ARP says don't use washers.  However, the soft cast iron galls even with the grease.

Dave Bean recommends hardened washers under the flywheel bolts.  I took Ken's advice.  No issues and no galling.  Talk to Ken.

This is very interesting... I have a shop (A Very Good Shop) rebuilding my Twin Cam as we speak. Got the head back from the machine shop yesterday. I bought ARP bolts for the whole engine, I may have to relay this message to them, since I'm not sure what ft lbs they will use.

I didn't open the ARP packaging. They know what they are doing but raise questions for myself. I'll talk to them and see what they recommend.

Thanks,

Keep us posted on what the shop says!

Thanks for the advice PFreen!

Spoke to my engine guy. Pistons are in and he is torquing the ARP bolts to what their specs say. Should have my car back at the end of the month or start of next month.
