Hi
I have an opportunity to buy an Renault engine, and the seller have some different types. Some look as the same rocker cover but with belts and pulleys on either ends or even both(?). The numbers I've is 807-10, 843j723 and a6ml752. I am not sure which have which belt/pulley placement. Can anyone tell me anything about this belt/pulley placement/engine type? (There is not too much room in front of the engine in the Europa).

You want the one with the water pump at the rear. That’s the position that works in a Europa. They have a cam with an extended rear section to mount the rear pulley. You can adapt the other engines as long as you have that cam.
I notice the transaxle pictured is a five speed, possibly a 395.

The bottom picture looks like a cross-flow, grab it!

There are three crossflows. Only one has the long cam and rear water pump. Not sure what the fourth is.

Wonder how cheap they are, maybe worth the price of admission for the TS heads?

The gearbox is a ng1034

TS or Gordini or crossflow. They used the crossflow in the Renault 16TS thus it is sometimes called a TS head.
Having the head is only part of the battle. A crossflow also uses a different:
- distributor (longer)
- camshaft (different valve order)
- pistons (valve pockets on both sides, different crown)
- exhaust manifold/header
- intake manifold(s) and carb(s)
Always best to try and find as complete an engine as possible.

... And what about the ng1034 gearbox? Is it one of the favourites?

Ok, this is a 697 and a gearbox that looks like the original one. Any opinions on that?

The 697 is a short stroke, 1470cc engine which revs cleanly and has a slightly higher hp output as compared to the later 1565. Parts are available and the engine responds well to tuning. The four speed transaxle is strong and gives few problems if the oil level is kept topped up.

It seems that the only other than the 697 that works, is a 807 and complete with carburetor exhaust alternator and such. And it has a 352-11 which I don't want, I think.

The gearbox on the 697 engine appears to be a 336?
Going by what looks to be an alloy lever on the cross-shaft, I suspect it's from a Renault 16 . . which means it's unsuitable for a Europa.
The only other engine that looks to be suitable is the 807 which has the water pump on the correct end and therefor, should have the longer cam.
The 352 gearbox should run in the correct direction for a Europa.
You'll need to check the spec of internal on this 352-11 to see if it's close enough to the 352's fitted to later Europas.
Be aware, the 352 was also fitted to the Renault 12 and had a shorter final drive, so, not suitable in my opinion.
The engine on the far left of the first pic looks like a 2 litre (or 2.2) OHC engine out of a Fuego, Renault 19 etc.
Here in Oz, the NG1 was used in the Renault 18 (I think). I'm not sure what Euro models carried it.
Stretching the memory but if I recall, it has a two spider diff . . which is fine.

It all comes down to money and what you want.
Factor in that they'll all likely need a full rebuild.
If the engines are $50 each, I'd take all the 807's.
What is the asking price for the engines and gearboxes?

Why is 336 unsuitable? Isn't the one used originally?

The 336 transaxles were modified by Renault specifically for the Lotus. The output shafts rotate the other way as compared to an R16 and the final drive ratio is unique to the Lotus transaxle.

Ok, I bought two engines and two gearboxes. It was just for having something to play with and some day get to run. The seller only had a 807 and a 697 with the waterpump in the right place, and I wanted the 807 because the engine installed in my car is build on the 807. I also wanted the 697 because it is like the original Europa engine (I know the Europa 697 is different). One gearbox is a NG1 and the other is the 336, which do not work, I can see it now, but I was in a hurry and I was curious to see the inside of it.
The 807 turns and the 697 does not. The 807 also have the most parts and I had the rest to make it complete. I will work on that on first.
