Title: Spax Shocks
Post by: kram350kram on Tuesday,May 26, 2020, 07:07:13 PM
Found a pair of Spax front shocks with part # AM G 620 00511 stamped on the body. They are dampener adjustable with the screw at the bottom. Does anyone know anything about these? How to remove the top eye, etc... Seem pretty heavy duty. Thanks

I can't speak specifically about yours but I have a set of Spax shocks. If they're like mine (and I think it's a safe assumption), the top eye doesn't come off. Why do you want to do that?

You can email Spax technical support. Here is their contact page from their website: https://www.spaxperformance.com/classic-contact/

Thinking of using an AFCO adjustment sleeve to adjust the ride height. Can't get that sleeve over the top eye. The top appears not to be welded to the shaft, small hole inside the eye, middle of the shaft? Not sure what that drilling is there for?  Thanks for the link!

I purchased new Spax from R D about 2 years ago the top is treaded on with green Loctite.
I clamped the shaft in a vise using 2 pieces of hardwood so not to damage it and screwed it off & on.

That you would need to cut and re-weld.  I would want it done by a good welder so that it's strong and the least amount of heat to the shaft.

Clamp it in a vise like I did and try to turn the top ? Looks like my shocks but mine are newer & yellow ?
Maybe try a little heat ? Don't know if it will work so go easy ?

They're welded no doubt. Spax stated these shocks were built in Jersey UK in the 1970's. They have Spax stamped in the lower body, paint looks like the original mottled green like other Spax shocks I have seen on the net of that era. A little machine work got me around having to take off the eyes. Plan on making them height adjustable like I did the rear Koni's, using AFCO racing sleeves. Just need to figure what spring rates to use.
