Title: What is this part?

 :confused:  Vehicle tear-down is easy... Now comes the difficult part...  While re-configuring my dash, I came across this in my "stuff" box next to my living room chair.  I have no memory of pulling it out and there aren't any photos of it on my iPod in the installed state.  I can only assume it came from my Lotus or one of my friends is having a good laugh at his joke on me.

Can anyone identify where this coil belongs and how it's supposed to be wired up to the car?  The number on it is: DOC 3CR-136-168.

It's a new one on me, I don't recognise it from my car. Of course it might normally have a plastic or metal box surrounding the coil, or may be something specific to the S2. The best I can suggest is paging through the electrical section of the parts manual, that has some good illustrations of components.

Or maybe it just fell into the box by mistake when you were tidying up ?

I really suspect one of my friends planted it.  Everyone knows I keep little things I want to work on while I'm watching TV in this box and practical jokes are a common occurrence amongst us.

Thanks for checking this out for me Brian... I'm pretty sure who's responsible now, so I'll have to respond.  Now I'll have to stop work on the car and start plotting:)

In focus or not, have you found out what it actually is yet ? 

I have my money on it being part of a triple phase flux capacitor, one of your pals thinks you're building a DeLorean.....

It has spade connectors.  Where are spade connectors used vs. Lucas style bullet connectors?

Back of the gauges, voltage stabilizer, turn signal rely box, relay flasher, and relays.  :beerchug:

OK... Here's the skinny.  The part is used to reduce the startup surge on AC electric motors.  My "buddy" had his refrigerator repaired and this came out of it.  He fessed up after I threatened him with no coffee (my coffee isn't your normal American swill).

Btw, the back of Smith gauges are filled with this type of fitting, so it fit, along with the crud it was covered with.
