Title: Broken cross flow cam
Post by: Runningwild on Wednesday,September 20, 2017, 04:59:45 PM
The cam shaft on my 843 cross flow engine is damaged. When it was stripped down for a rebuild the gear in the middle of the cam had damaged teeth. The ends were all chewed off.  Am I crazy to think that they some how they can be welded ???? , repaired ,Or what ever and recut.  The cams are non existent. Any suggestions!  Thanks. Tom

Sorry to hear that.  Cams are very hard to find.  There is one place that sells new ones, but they ain't cheap:

http://www.catcams.co.uk/acatalog/Renault_R12_Gordini.html

The gear gets chewed up when the head is mounted without using the proper alignment tools.

I visited the site , catcams, very nice. I needed an alternate site .

Maybe put that link on the vendors page?

While we're talking cams for crossflow engines...,
Assuming we're putting that engine in an Europa
The cam pulley would have to exit the back of engine by the water pump so could you use a
Renault 821-30 cam ? So are we talking about a cam that is fwd or aft?

You are right that a wedge head cam will physically fit but crossflow cams and wedge head cams have their exhaust and intake lobes in different orders.

So to do a mod you do need a cam from cat cams but what would you ask for?
I will re read the crossflow engine mod paperwork on something other than my phone.
Thanks again JB.

The 807.20 is the cross flow cam.  Not sure if they offer multiple grinds.

I'm referring to the 843 crossflow engine which would need to be changed definitely bc of the pully.
, and lobes as you stated. That's why am gathering info on cams To fit in a Europa. I think the PDF was written by RD and they said it would be expensive and to go with a 807. This statement is just what I read briefly because I have that engine to rebuild after the 821-30 build.

Thanks again JB you are definitely a wealth of information.
