Title: Trunnion Oil advice
Post by: Paul_71 on Wednesday,April 13, 2016, 12:07:01 PM
I've read that Ep90 is the best option for the Trunnions, but cannot locate it here in the US. Is there an equivalent that I can use? I see GL5 is no forgiving on yellow metals, so is GL4 the better option?

I asked a college buddy of mine who worked for Shell Oil as an engineer (not a lubrication engineer, but he worked closely with them) about this and he said that moly grease outperforms oil in sliding friction applications (such as a trunnion) hands down. It's also easier to work with.

That's what I used.

80w-90 GL-4 is fine.

Far be it for me to disagree with a lubrication engineer, but I prefer to use the recommended oil.  It flows into every nook and cranny rather than making a bee line for the nearest exit that grease always seems to do.

YMMV
